I think the coolest hike I have ever done around Flagstaff would have to be Lava River Cave. It is not a very long but it is challenging because it is so dark that you can’t even see your hand an inch away from your face when you turn your flash light off. I recommend before you go on this hike that you bring a flash light per/person (the head lamp kinds would be the best because there are a lot of times you have to climb or crawl) really good shoes the bottom of the cave id really sharp and you don't want to be wearing converse and a snack for the end (but keep it in your car it is a pain to have to have a back pack and have to crawl). The coolest part of this cave is when you are near the end and the ceiling is like thirty feet. It is really moment for all of the tall people who have been crouching for a long time. I am not sure if this hike Is open again for the season but when it does it is a fun one to do with a small group of people.

Did you see the hieroglyphs at the end? When you get to the warm (relatively)spot at the end you can crawl back another four or five feet and see hieroglyphs originating from the last decade or maybe even the one before! It's a cool hike. Have you ever been to Red Mountain?
I didn't get to see the hieroglyphs at the end. there were three of us and one of our flash lights stopped working. Red mountain sounds cool where is it
I love backpacking. I climbed Mt. Chirripo in Costa Rica and hiked through valleys in Hawaii. This summer I am going to hike a bit of the Swiss Alps for my mom's 60th birthday. I'm psyched. Anyways, I hope you have fun planning it.
I was joking about the hieroglyphs. It's just tagging. Red Mountain is 20 to 30 miles out of town on 180 (past Snowbowl). It's on the south side of the road, just look for the sign. It's a short 2 mile hike in to a very cool spot. Check it out.
